MIXED COUPLES

AUDITIONS SET

NEW BEDFORD, MA - - - Auditions for Mixed Couples, David Prideaux’s comedy/drama, will be held at 7:30 p.m., June 29 at Your Theatre, Inc., 136 Rivet St. (at County St.) in the auditorium of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. Robin Richard, director, will be selecting three men and two women for the production that runs Nov. 9-19.

The play centers on two couples whose chance meeting at an airfield is ironic, since they had switched partners 25 years earlier and haven’t seen each other since. Throughout the play, their conversation turns funnier as their veneers crumble, and it is clear neither couple gained what they expected from the switch.

Principal characters (all in their 50s) include a staid, serious English professor; his wife, an at-home mother; a rich, hard-driving businessman dealing in real estate and stock trading; and his wife, after many years still an aspiring actress. The pilot of their plane is in his 20s or 30s.

None of the four principals is as happy or settled as he or she appears to be. All have a plethora of insecurities.

Mr. Richard says tryouts will involve impromptu reading from the script. Actors wanting more information should call 508/993-0772.

Critics have called the play a “witty and ingenious comedy” and “a sophisticated comedy of words and situations”.

Now in its 59th season, Your Theatre, Inc. was rated the favorite 2005 community theatre organization in Southeastern Massachusetts in a poll conducted by The New Bedford Standard-Times. The poll, which asked the newspaper’s reader’s to choose their preferred businesses and service providers in a variety of categories, drew more than 4,000 responses.

Founded in 1946, YTI is incorporated as a non-profit community theatre which seeks to enhance the cultural life of New Bedford, Southeastern Massachusetts, and nearby communities through the study and regular presentation of dramatic productions and other programs of high quality and professional standards.

The company also develops and encourages artistic talent through the establishment and operation of workshops, theatre productions and other dramatic training opportunities.
