COMEDY/DRAMA OPENS NOV. 9
NEW BEDFORD, MA --- David Prideaux’s comedy/drama Mixed Couples, directed by Robin Richard of New Bedford, will open Nov. 9 for nine performances produced by Your Theatre, Inc.
The play runs Wednesdays through Saturdays Nov. 9-12 and 16-19 with a matinee Sunday, Nov. 13. More information is available by calling Your Theatre at 508/993-0772.
Your Theatre is located in the auditorium complex of St. Martin’s Church, 136 Rivet St. (at County St.) in New Bedford. Free parking is available at the entrance to the theatre from the parking lot on the east side of County St. just steps south of Rivet St.
Mr. Richard, who will be assisted by Stage Manager Judy Lemay of New Bedford, says featured actors in Mixed Couples are Patty Carreau-Souza and Evan Rousseau, both of New Bedford; Susan Fournier of Dartmouth, Lee J. Fortier of Fairhaven, and Robert Duquette of Somerset.
Set in 1927, the play centers on two couples waiting at an airfield for the fog to lift so they can fly to Washington.
One couple are metropolitan types. He, played by Mr. Fortier, is a rich, hard-driving businessman dealing in real estate and stock trading. She, played by Mrs. Carreau-Souza, is (after many years) still an aspiring actress.
The other couple are suburbanites. He is a staid English professor played by Mr. Duquette. She, performed by Mrs. Fournier, is a housewife and at-home mother.
Mr. Rousseau will play the pilot of their plane.
The couples’ chance meeting involves an irony that makes their veneers crumble, as their conversation turns funnier and it becomes clear no one gained what they expected from their marriages.
Drama critics have called the play a “witty and ingenious comedy” and “a mature, stylish comedy of words and situations”.
Now in its 59th season, Your Theatre, Inc. was rated the favorite 2005 community theatre organization in Southeastern Massachusetts in a poll conducted by The New Bedford Standard-Times.
The poll, which asked the newspaper’s readers to choose their preferred businesses and service providers in a variety of categories, drew more than 4,000 responses.
Founded in 1946, YTI is incorporated as a non-profit community theatre which seeks to enhance the cultural life of New Bedford, Southeastern Massachusetts, and nearby communities through the study and regular presentation of dramatic productions and other programs of high quality and professional standards.
The company also develops and encourages artistic talent through the establishment and operation of workshops, theatre productions and other dramatic training opportunities.
