DRAMA UNIT SEEKS DIVERSITY AMONG ACTORS
NEW BEDFORD, MA --- To build its roster of actors --- including those from diverse minority ethnic, cultural, and social backgrounds --- Your Theatre Inc. is launching a two-pronged audition schedule for plays in its 2006-2007 60th production season.
Initially, open auditions scheduled March 28 will welcome persons who have never appeared in a YTI show. All auditions will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the theatre’s auditorium complex headquarters at St. Martin’s Church, 136 Rivet St. (at County St.) in New Bedford.
No experience or preparation is required, and persons wishing to audition will be asked to read from an assortment of dramatic pieces.
“We are inviting people of all races, ethnic groups, age categories, and social backgrounds,” says YTI’s Artistic Director Edward J. Maguire. “We encourage diversity. We deplore discrimination,” he adds.
Other audition dates for specific plays include: April 4 for Hot L Baltimore by Lanford Wilson, April 13 for The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife by Charles Busch, April 18 for Later Life by A. R. Gurney, April 25 for Margaret Edson’s Wit, and May 2 for Joe DiPietro’s Over the River and Into the Woods.
Additional information is available by calling the theatre at 508/993-0772.
During its 59th season, Your Theatre, Inc. was rated the favorite 2005 community theatre organization in Southeastern Massachusetts in a poll conducted by The New Bedford Standard-Times.
The poll, which asked the newspaper’s readers to choose their preferred businesses and service providers in a variety of categories, drew more than 4,000 responses.
Founded in 1946, YTI is incorporated as a non-profit community theatre which seeks to enhance the cultural life of New Bedford, Southeastern Massachusetts, and nearby communities through the study and regular presentation of dramatic productions and other programs of high quality and professional standards.
The company also develops and encourages artistic talent through the establishment and operation of workshops, theatre productions and other dramatic training opportunities.
