9 ACTORS WIN ROLES IN OSCAR WILDE PLAY

 

 

NEW BEDFORD, MA --- Nine SouthCoast area actors have been cast in Your Theatre, Inc.’s production of Oscar Wilde’s comedy The Importance of Being Earnest.

          The actors are Dennis J. Amaral, Caroline Cuccia, Danielle Gelehrter, Shannon E. Gracia, Eric Paradis, and Armand R. Viera, all of New Bedford; Clifford Wood of Assonet, George Arnold of Dartmouth, and Carol Oliva of Fairhaven.

          Directed by Your Theatre’s Artistic Director Edward J. Maguire of Fairhaven, the play runs Wednesdays through Saturdays May 10-13 and May 17-20, 2006 with a matinee Sunday, May 14. Robin Richard of Fairhaven is stage manager.

          Curtain time is 8 p.m. for all shows except the 2:30 p.m. Sunday matinee.

          In the play, heroes Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, played respectively by Mr. Paradis and Mr. Amaral, both adopt the identity of Jack’s non-existent brother “Ernest” to conduct their wooing of young ladies played by Ms Cuccia and Ms Gracia. An obstacle to the lovers’ happiness is played by Mrs. Gelehrter.

          Supporting roles of a governess, a minister, a butler, and a manservant are played, respectively, by Ms Oliva, Mr. Wood, Mr. Viera, and Mr. Arnold.

          British Broadcasting Company Drama Critic Jason Best calls Wilde’s play “a masterpiece of elegant wit and artifice.” Robert K. Elder of The Chicago Tribune says “The Importance of Being Earnest inspires rapid-fire bouts of laughter.”

          For non-subscribers, ticket prices are $12.00 for Wednesday, Thursday, or Sunday performances, $14.00 for Friday shows, and $15.00 for Saturday performances.

          However, a single $2.00 discount for each show is available to any person who presents proof of membership in the American Automobile Association, Massachusetts Teachers Association, New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, or Southcoast Health System’s Employee Advantage Program. Other discounts are available for senior citizens, students, and military personnel.

          Now in its 59th season, Your Theatre, Inc. was rated the favorite 2005 community theatre organization in Southeastern Massachusetts in a poll conducted by The New Bedford Standard-Times.

          The poll, which asked the newspaper’s readers to choose their preferred businesses and service providers in a variety of categories, drew more than 4,000 responses.
