DRAMA COMPANY SLATES 5 PLAYS FOR 60th SEASON
NEW BEDFORD, MA --- Your Theatre Inc., this city’s much-acclaimed community theatre company, will produce five plays in its coming 60th production season.
Lanford Wilson’s Hot L Baltimore is slated to open in September 2006. Robin Richard will direct.
In November, Stephen R. Kay will direct The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife by Charles Busch. That will be followed by a January 2007 production of A. R. Gurney’s Later Life with Lawrence R. Houbre Jr. as director.
YTI’s March presentation of Margaret Edson’s Wit will be directed by Cynthia J. Messier and followed in May by Joe DiPietro’s Over the River and Through the Woods with Edward J. Maguire directing.
Additional information is available by calling the theatre at 508/993-0772.
A character-driven play filled with humor and pathos, Hot L Baltimore won the Obie Award, New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award.
Described by a New York Times drama critic as “a window-rattling comedy of mid-life malaise”, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife won the Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award and was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Play.
Later Life, billed as a comedy/drama, is a story of love and second chances. One reviewer describes it as a play “not to miss, especially if you seek the true meaning of love.”
Boasting the Pulitzer Prize, Drama Desk and New York Drama Critics Circle, Outer Critics, Obie, and Lucille Lortel awards, Wit is punctuated by scenes about a woman's battle with ovarian cancer and her evolution from being a mind-centered individual to one connected with her humanity.
Described by one reviewer as a “sweet and nostalgic look at family and romantic love”, Over the River and Through the Woods is a comedy/drama whose theme is the importance of family.
During its just completed 2005-2006 59th season, Your Theatre was rated the favorite community theatre organization in Southeastern Massachusetts in a poll conducted by The New Bedford Standard-Times.
The poll, which asked the newspaper’s readers to choose their preferred businesses and service providers in a variety of categories, drew more than 4,000 responses.
Founded in 1946, YTI is incorporated as a non-profit community theatre which seeks to enhance the cultural life of New Bedford, Southeastern Massachusetts, and nearby communities through the study and regular presentation of dramatic productions and other programs of high quality and professional standards.
The company also develops and encourages artistic talent through the establishment and operation of workshops, theatre productions and other dramatic training opportunities.
